If you fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” you are doing well.
A reporter once recounted this story about Dorothy Day. He’d come to interview her and entered the room where she sat talking with an elderly man who’d clearly been living on the street. She looked up at the reporter and asked, “Did you want to speak to one of us?” He was struck by her lack of presumption. Of course, both she and this homeless man were of equal importance; indeed, every neighbor has his story to tell.
