Symbols are things that are easily recognized. They represent abstract and often invisible concepts. Today’s feast … the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus … uses the symbol of the heart to represent the unconditional love of God for us.
In Deuteronomy … Moses tells the people that God set His heart on them and chose them as His own … because He loved them.
John … in the second reading proclaims a basic truth in saying … “God is love”.
And … Jesus … in today’s Gospel … tells us and shows us how to act in a loving way … He says … “I am meek and humble of heart”.
Often … pictures of the Sacred Heart show a heart with rays emanating out in all directions. His heart is open to all of us … without judgment … and without effort on our part.
Today’s solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus … provides us the symbol of love … the heart … to remind us that our hearts need to be open to give and receive love.
God’s love for us is unquestionable … and … unconditional. Jesus invites us to be like Him … to learn from Him … to make our hearts like His.
May our hearts be like His … open to give and receive love.
