July 2, 2014 Amos 5:14-15, 21-24; Matthew 8:28-34
“Seek good and not evil” … “hate evil and love good” … “let justice prevail”. These words from the prophet Amos … appeal to the people again … to act justly!
Amos goes on to attack the hypocrisy of the people in their worship. He tells them that whatever they do in worship or action must be done sincerely … must come from the love in their hearts.
The story in the Gospel is not just about demons and pigs … rather … it is a focus on the power of Jesus … the power He had to liberate people from evil.
If we carefully consider today’s responsorial psalm … we can see that it links these two readings together. “To the upright (read it as the just) … I will show the saving power of God”.
May we be upright … loving and just … that we may appreciate and know God’s healing power.
