Reflection by Sister Mary Albertine Stachowski, cssf
Over the past several days … the scripture readings have especially pointed out that a life of humility is the core of the spirit of Christmas. We’ve seen women especially … being open to God’s messengers and fulfilling important roles in birthing key figures in our salvation history.
None of the circumstances we heard were simple … we had women who were aged and barren conceiving children. We had Mary … conceiving by the power of the Holy Spirit. These are things way beyond our understanding.
Yet all of these women were humble enough to listen to God’s messengers and follow God’s plan.
They were alert and ready and welcomed God into their lives.
They lived the first verse of today’s responsorial psalm that says: “make known your ways … teach me your paths … guide me in truth … teach me.”
In our age … God speaks to our hearts through messengers … they are people the Lord places in our lives who help guide us toward a new level of holiness. AND we … in turn … are messengers to others. God’s word comes to us any time … through any one.
And so … as we see Advent draw to a close … let us be aware of God’s messengers who cross our path … and let us humbly live the love … the peace … the joy and hope that is the spirit of Christmas.
