February 5, 2015 Hebrews 12:18-19, 21-24; Mark 6:7-13
The Gospel begins … “Jesus summoned the Twelve”. Being “summoned” … usually implies a consequent action. In today’s Gospel … the call is to a very energetic agenda that Jesus has ready for His followers!
Gospel Mk 6:7-13
Jesus summoned the Twelve and began to send them out two by two
and gave them authority over unclean spirits.
He instructed them to take nothing for the journey but a walking stick
–no food, no sack, no money in their belts.
They were, however, to wear sandals but not a second tunic.
He said to them,
“Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you leave from there.
Whatever place does not welcome you or listen to you,
leave there and shake the dust off your feet
in testimony against them.”
So they went off and preached repentance.
The Twelve drove out many demons,
and they anointed with oil many who were sick and cured them.
He gives them a commission … empowers them and assures support … as He sends them out in pairs to act in His name.
They respond … they “go off” … journey …to preach repentance … drive out demons … anoint and cure the sick.
Jesus instructs the Twelve to do all this with very little material resource. Jesus tells them to travel light … no extra clothes … no food … no money. All they had … was the power of Jesus and their faith in Him. That would be enough!
To be successful in this ministry … they had to have great dependence on … and trust in God. The truth of the matter is … they needed very little materially … because they were given an abundance spiritually.
In our lives … we each experience the dynamics expressed in this Gospel. We are called … commissioned … supported … empowered … and we journey every single day … powered by our faith life.
Our challenge is to respond … just as the Twelve did … to carry on the ministry and share the Gospel with others.
