We hear in today’s first reading that way back in the Old Testament … at the time of the prophet Isaiah … a prediction of a virgin bearing the Messiah is made known to the people.

In the Gospel … we hear the fulfillment of that prophecy unfold. Mary … a young virgin … is greeted by God’s messenger … an angel who announces God’s incredible plan. Mary is confused … perplexed! The plan defies all logic and natural law. Mary asks … how could this be? The angel throws some light on the situation … as Mary listens … and responds with a humble and faithful “yes”. She accepts God’s plan and steps into the unknown. It was at that moment that the “Word became flesh” … the Incarnation unfolds.

Mary’s faith was tested … but her response changed her life … and the history of humankind forever.

Mary’s humility and obedience serve as an example for us … helping us to be confident enough in our own faith to be able to say yes to God’s direction for us.

May we each have the grace to be unselfish in responding to God’s call for us.
