Who belongs to the family of God?

At the end of today’s Gospel … Jesus tells us who His mother and brothers (read that as His family) are … they are the ones who hear the word of God and act on it.

Notice … this identification as family is about faithfulness and action … rather than blood lines.

Those who “HEAR” the word … internalize it and “ACT” on it … no matter who they are or where they come from … belong to God’s family. Jesus uses this as a teachable moment … He changes the focus from entitlement … to relationship. It is no longer sufficient just to be born into the chosen race … it is no longer sufficient just to go about following ritual law. What IS important … is some active and intentional participation in relationship with God.

“Hear” … H-E-A-R. Add a “T” and we now have H-E-A-R-T … “heart”. That is what Jesus is getting at. May each of us hear the word … take it to heart … and live it.
