Within the next day, Pope Francis will celebrate the canonization mass of Fr. Junípero Serra, OFM, the Franciscan friar who founded the California missions in the 18th Century. Though many may have heard something about the controversy surrounding his cause for canonization, namely his alleged mistreatment of native peoples, few know much more if anything about him. Thanks to the efforts of the scholarly society Academy of American Franciscan History, a video was produced and recently released providing the foundational details of the life and story of Serra.
