THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK FROM ST. AUGUSTINE SPIRITUALITY CENTER
December 13-19, 2015 Laredo, Texas
“Shout for joy…Sing joyfully…for the Lord, your God, is in your midst, a mighty savior.” Zephaniah 3:14-18
After such a full week of celebrations, this week can sort of be a letdown. However, the Church, being mindful of the need to satisfy some of our expectations, gives us Gaudete (Rejoice) Sunday. It has been called, “The Sunday of Joy” and “Rose Sunday,” on which the priest wears rose colored vestments. Pope Francis gives us some sound advice. He says, “Instead of fretting about what still needs to be done before
Christmas, we need to think of all the good things life has given us.”
St. John of the Cross is the only saint that visits us this week. His life reminds us of the penance we need to do in order to grow more deeply into Christ-like living. He was a Spanish mystic, Doctor of the Church and founder of the Discalced Carmelites in the 16th century, along with St. Teresa of Avila.
Celebrations can be so much fun. We can always be aware of other religions’ holidays and wish them many blessings. Hanukkah is presently being celebrated by the Jews from December 7-14 and Kwanzaa occurs from December 26-January 1. Instead of suppressing religious symbols in public places and government property (or should I say the property of the people), they should all be displayed with honor and respect.
May your Advent continue to be a journey of hope, love and mercy.
Your sister on the way to the crib of the Christ Child,
Sister Rosemarie Goins,
