January 8, 2016 1 John 5:5-13; Luke 5:12-16
The wonders that Jesus worked … certainly made people take notice. You would think the people would recognize Him as the Messiah they were awaiting.
Not so easy!
He did not fit their vision of what the Messiah would be like. They were expecting a powerful … earthly king … they wanted a king who would even the score for them against their enemies … and they missed what was right in their midst.
Jesus did show power … just not the kind the people expected. He came to bring a fullness of life that was beyond the visible. Jesus wanted people to see a bigger picture … not just the spectacular part. He is not just a “fixer” of problems … He is the Lord … the Savior.
The bigger picture involves living lives dedicated to Him … living lives that help shape the world according to His call for justice … for peace … for mercy. The bigger picture is eternal life.
In this special Holy Year of mercy … let us pray for one another … that we may stretch our expectations and vision … to see the hand of God in our daily situations … to not miss what is among us.
Let us seek God’s mercy and to extend mercy to others. Let us recognize the bigger picture … and be filled with joy for how awesome God is.
