January 13, 2016 1 Samuel 3:1-10, 19-20; Mark 1:29-39
Samuel was special … he was pledged to God’s service. Today we find him in the temple … in training for priestly service … with Eli … the High Priest … as his mentor.
Three times … Samuel hears a voice calling his name and awakening him. Samuel does not seem to mind the disturbance … but he mistakes the voice … thinking it is Eli. Each time he mistakenly responds to Eli … and is sent back to bed. It was on the fourth try that there is no mistake … Eli … the mentor … realizes that this is the voice of God. Finally … they both get it right.
Samuel responds and receives the grace and blessings needed to accomplish what God is calling him to do.
Like Samuel … we need to be listening … and open to act on what we hear. The call from God required Samuel to change his routine.
God may speak to us in ways we do not expect … and we too, need to be willing to be disturbed from our routine.
Let us pray for one another that we have the grace to recognize and be up to the challenge to respond to God’s call … however and whenever it comes to us.
