“Jesus summoned the Twelve and began to send them out two by two.”
Words from our gospel today, according to Mark. (Mark 6: 7-13)
The Church, in its essence, is missionary.
Saint Paul VI said that the Church exists for one essential reason: to evangelize.
To bring people to God.
To bring God to people.
We are Christ in the world.
There is a mystical oneness between Christ, his Church, and the individual.
So when we engage the world, we are Christ.
And that mission requires a human touch.
He didn’t send the apostles on a letter-writing campaign.
He didn’t advise them to develop programs.
He sent them out in person for face to face encounter.
To preach, to heal, to drive out demons.
One by one.
Day by day.
The preparation is limited.
No food. No money. No sack.
He doesn’t advise them to plan ahead or to pack abundantly for unforeseen dangers.
Just a tunic, sandals and walking stick.
They had everything they needed within them.
Because He was with them.
He always is.
